Academic Standing (traditional-age undergraduates)

Normal Academic Progress

Full-time traditional undergraduates are highly encouraged to enroll in at least 32 semester hours each academic year in order to graduate within 4 years.  However, full-time enrollment is met when students complete at least 24 semester hours per year while maintaining a 2.0 cumulative GPA; a part-time student, when completing 12 semester hours per year while maintaining a 2.0 cumulative GPA.

Student class level is determined by the number of semester hours completed as follows: 0-27, freshman; 28-59, sophomore; 60-91, junior; 92 and above, senior.  Students must meet the satisfactory academic progress standards as described under Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy in the Financial Aid section of the University Catalog to maintain financial aid eligibility.  The University Catalog can be accessed here: http://www.laverne.edu/catalog/

Academic Warning

Traditional undergraduate students in good standing who fail to earn a 2.0 GPA in a given semester will be given an academic warning.  The academic warning is posted on the transcript and grade report for that semester.

Academic Probation

Academic standing is determined after every fall and spring semester for traditional undergraduates.  A student whose cumulative La Verne GPA falls below 2.0 will be placed on academic probation, with an appropriate notation made on the transcript.  Academic probation is a serious warning to the student that his/her scholastic record is unsatisfactory.

Undergraduate students on academic probation must obtain a La Verne GPA of 2.0 or above each semester until their cumulative La Verne GPA reaches 2.0.  Students will remain on academic probation until their cumulative La Verne GPA rises to 2.0 or better.  Students will not be eligible to enroll in the culminating activity or for commencement until academic probation is removed.

A student who fails to improve his/her academic standing after one semester will be academically disqualified.

Academic Disqualification

Traditional undergraduate students who fail to earn a 2.0 La Verne GPA in any semester after being placed on academic probation will be academically disqualified.  Academic disqualification will be recorded on the transcript.  Students who are disqualified may apply for reinstatement immediately or after an absence of one year.  During the time of the student's absence, it is highly recommended that the student takes classes elsewhere to improve his/her academic standing.

Academic Reinstatement or Readmission

The Dean or his/her Associate may consider extenuating circumstances in a student's appeal for reinstatement immediately after receiving a notice of academic disqualification.  Because financial aid is not guaranteed and may be denied even if the student is academically reinstated, the student may need to consider a financial plan on how he/she will intend to pay tuition in the absence of financial aid.  Academic reinstatement and financial aid by appeal are not guaranteed, thus, students are expected to treat these appeals as serious matters.

Students who appeal immediately upon receiving notice of academic disqualification and are denied reinstatement, may apply for reinstatement after an absence of two semesters (we will consider reinstatement after a one semester absence).  During the time of the student's absence, the he/she should take classes elsewhere to improve his/her academic standing.  Students will be expected to enroll full-time at another institution in courses that would count toward a bachelor degree at the University of La Verne.  Also, students must demonstrate academic success at the other institution (a GPA of 3.0 would make a good impression).  A student may request the University of La Verne to accept the units in transfer upon approval of his/her reinstatement.

Students who withdraw from the University, abandon their studies and do not register for classes for two consecutive semesters, or are denied academic reinstatement will be required to reapply for admission.  Applications and instructions for admission can be found here: http://www.laverne/edu/admission/undergraduate.

Course Overloads

A traditional undergraduate at the Central Campus must petition to the Undergraduate Appeals Committee if he/she wishes to enroll for a total of more than 18 semester hours at La Verne and/or other institutions in the fall and/or spring semesters.  Course overloads for January Interterm and/or retroactive appeals for course overloads are based on extenuating circumstances and are rarely approved.  It is strongly recommended that students complete the appeal process, and wait for a decision, prior to enrollment in overload courses.

Enrollment of Undergraduate Students in Term and/or Online Courses

Undergraduates may not enroll in term courses offered by RCA or La Verne Online if they are traditional undergraduates at the Central Campus and/or are receiving federal/state financial aid.  The no cross-over policy was written to insure that students are not cross enrolling between semesters and terms.  Traditional undergraduates must be enrolled exclusively as a semester based or a term based student not a mix of both.  Thus, the Academic Advising office will decline students' requests to enroll in RCA terms and/or La Verne Online classes.
