An Open Letter to Our Students and Alumni
re: the current job market
Dear Students and Alumni,
Career Services realizes that many of you are concerned about your prospects for employment during the current recession. Given the frequent news of layoffs and hiring freezes in the professional world, your career options may seem very limited. However, be assured that employers are continuing to hire. Do not allow the downward economy to keep you from preparing to meet your career goals.
Career Services is here to help you during this difficult time. We provide an array of services, including resume and cover letter reviews, one-on-one mock (practice) interviews, and tips for professionalism, career changing and effective job search skills. In addition, we hold etiquette dinners, career fairs and networking events to provide you with the necessary resources to succeed.
In a competitive job market, your resume and cover letter are your primary marketing tools. These two crucial items allow you to highlight your transferrable skills and display your most relevant qualifications to a potential employer. A good resume and cover letter will set you apart from other job applicants. You must be able to easily communicate the skills you have to offer and why you are the best candidate for the job. Also be willing to pursue internships and volunteer opportunities in your field in order to gain experience and valuable networking contacts. Keep in contact with former employers and colleagues and ask for positive letters of recommendation. Successful job seekers are willing to put in the work to stay on top of their search, entertain employment opportunities that you may never have considered in the past, and keep a positive attitude.
Whether you are a first-year student or La Verne alum, let us help you navigate this changing professional world. We believe that it is never too early to explore opportunities to help you prepare for your career, and that it’s never too late to make a career change. The knowledge and skills you gather from your academics and Career Services will put you on the track to success, making you a valuable asset to any company or business. Good luck and stay optimistic!
Sincerely,
Career Services
