The University of La Verne softball team has hit its stride as the Leopards have improved to 14-6 overall on the year and an impressive 8-2 record in SCIAC play.

La Verne managed to come out victorious in all three games played March 18 and 19 against Pomona-Pitzer and Whittier.

“I think we are finally coming together offensively and everyone is doing their part as a team when they’re up,” said outfielder Morgan Dobis, who hit two home runs in game one against Pomona-Pitzer.

The Leopards wasted no time getting on the board as Dobis connected for a three run home run in the bottom of the first inning.

After another run scored for ULV in the next inning, the Leopards brought in another three runs in the fourth inning including two by senior Jessica DeGiacomo on a single.

Dobis finished the game with another home run, this time a solo shot to end the game at 8-0 in the fifth inning.

The Leopards were paced again by the brilliant play of starter Mary Olson who went five innings giving up only four hits and no runs while striking out four and only walking one batter.

“Whenever they call on me to pitch, I am going to pitch my game,” Olson said , “Everyone knows their role on this team and we all try to play the same role.”

The Leopards continued to shine offensively in the second game of the doubleheader against the Sagehens.

Sophomore Trisha McCormick got things started with an RBI single that scored Dobis, and then later was driven home on a groundout RBI by catcher Theresa Reyes.

La Verne added another two runs with RBI double by starter Amanda Jones and Dobis singled to bring home Jones for the second run.

The Sagehens scored their first runs of the game in the fourth inning following a wild pitch and hit batter, but still left the bases loaded.

The Leopards responded by scoring seven more runs in the next three innings to win the game by another mercy rule victory, 11-3.

Third baseman Kelly Silyagi continued her recent offensive onslaught with a two-run home run during the Leopards’ four-run final inning.

In addition, Jones picked up her third victory of the year as well as a two run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Freshman Kelly Ince also picked up her first save in two innings of relief work while striking out two Sagehen batters in the win.

“Everyone is being productive for the team by getting productive outs when we are out there,” Dobis said.

Riding high on the sweep of Pomona the Leopards looked to finish their rescheduled game due to rain against Whittier, with expectations of completing the weekend with an undefeated record.

After three runs in the first two innings, the Leopards converted another three runs highlighted by the solo shot to start the inning by DeGiacomo to push ahead by four runs.

La Verne and Whittier scored in the first three innings and after that it became a shutout on offense for both teams.

Olson was a major reason as she shut the door by blanking the Poets in the last four innings. Jones picked up her second victory in two days as the Leopards outlasted the Poets 6-2 in the Sunday matinee.

“We need to keep working hard to keep the goals we set for ourselves,” Jones said . “We got big games coming up so we need to keep our intensity up and stay focused so we can play well and get the title.”

La Verne will continue its quest for a SCIAC championship against Redlands for a doubleheader March 31, with the first game starting at 2 p.m.

On Saturday the Leopards will host SCIAC opponent Cal Lutheran for a two game series beginning at noon.
