Greek Week was in full effect on campus this week, with the annually anticipated event rolling out new challenges to keep the competition high.
This year’s theme was “Best Greek Week Ever,” taken from the popular VH-1 show “Best Week Ever.”
Greek Week officially started on Monday with each organization competing in the Coming Soon competition.
Each organization spent the whole day creating movie posters that promoted Greek unity. At the end of the day, Iota Delta’s poster was crowned the best.
New to this year competition was Monday night’s dodge ball game, which was held in the gym.
The women kicked things off first, pitting the women against each other with Sigma Kappa against Phi Sigma Sigma and Iota Delta against Alpha Omicron Pi.
Iota Delta and Sigma Kappa easily cruised through their best of three matches and battled it out for the winner of the women’s bracket.
Iota Delta freshman Lisa Bakke, who also served as her team’s coach, helped lead the team to two straight wins against Sigma Kappa.
“I’m proud of our girls,” Bakke said, “It’s my first Greek Week, and it’s really intense.”
Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Phi Delta Theta took the floor next, which promised to be a spectacle. But things remained one sided in the best of 7 series, with the Phi Delts dominating SAE in four games.
“We gave it our best effort and came out on top,” said Chris Weedon, president of Phi Delta Theta.
To cap the night off, Iota Delta and Phi Delta Theta played each other. Like the matches before, the Phi Delts swept Iota Delta in two straight matches.
Greek Week co-coordinator Alan Hernandez stressed that while Greek Week is about competitions both physical and mental, it also helps “promote unity with in the Greek system at the University.”
“It (is) all in spirit and fun,” Hernandez said.
Also not lost among the week’s events is service.
Each organization collected aluminum cans for recycling in which 80 percent will be donated to the Ortega Family Fund, who were part of the Christmas Eve shooting tragedy in Covina last year.
The other 20 percent is going to the Greek Week winner’s philanthropy of choice.
Other events held this week were the Greek Series of Pop Culture, won by Alpha Omicron Pi; Family Feud, won by Sigma Alpha Epsilon; the ever so popular Tug-O-War and Obstacle course, won by Phi Delta Theta and a comedian and inspirational message about alcohol by comedian Bernie McGrenahan.
This is a week of fun, service, competition and celebration of Greek unity. It is also about bragging rights to be the winner of the week.
The Lip-Sync and Greek Awards will be held tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Frantz Athletic Courts.
