Stephen Morgan, president of the University of La Verne, helped highlight a weeklong book fair with his own storytelling time on Wednesday at Barnes & Noble in the Montclair Plaza.

Morgan read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle to a group of about 15 children. The children, none older than 5, happily listened to Morgan’s story while contributing to its telling.

“I love kids. I have grandkids of my own,” Morgan said.

The book fair was a fund-raiser for the family literacy conference held by the child development department every year at the University.

For every purchase made on behalf of ULV, Barnes & Noble donated a percentage to the University.

The literacy conference, to be held May 2, is to help teach parents techniques to bringing education out of the class and into the home.

Professor of Education Cindy Cary said that the conference helps establish a healthy educational community.

“We want to build a bridge between home and school,” Cary said. “All of life’s experiences can be seen through books.”

Barnes & Noble has continued to do its part in sharing the world of children’s education with the rest of the community.

Already on display in the store’s large window is a painted paper caterpillar created by preschool students from the Fairplex Child Development Center.

“We are a business but we also believe in spreading literacy,” said Barnes & Noble spokesman Jim Earhart. “The community needs to know that there is a safe environment for children to share their work with the public.”
