With the departure of Christopher Ragsdale from the athletics director post, Julie Kline has accepted the position of interim athletic director for the 2008-2009 school year.
After coming to La Verne in July 2003, Ragsdale will now take the position of commissioner of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Provost Alden Reimonenq made this announcement through an e-mailed statement on Monday.
Currently, Kline serves as the senior women’s administrator in the athletic department and is also an associate professor of movement and sports sciences.
Kline will still serve as the head women’s basketball coach while attending to her new duties as interim athletic director.
In 2003, the Leopards took the SCIAC title for the first time under Kline’s direction.
Kline has served as the head coach of the women’s basketball team for 17 seasons, leading her squad to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championship in the 2007-2008 season and SCIAC conference championships for the 2002-2003 and 2006-2007 campaigns.
Kline also served as head softball coach from 1993-2003. Under her leadership the team took four conference championships, including three in a row from 2000-2002.
She was also named All-American in basketball and softball while a student-athlete for the Whittier Poets and has been inducted into the Whittier College Athletic Hall of Fame.
Reimonenq has not yet announced a timetable for the formation of a search committee to fill the athletics director position permanently.
