Summertime is just around the corner and it is almost time to slip into those “itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikinis.”
For many women bathing suit season is not quite as enjoyable as it should be because face it, not everyone looks like Jessica Simpson in a bikini.
As soon as a woman slips on her bikini for the first time since last summer, she immediately notices that extra little roll on her stomach, the cottage cheese on her thighs and the fact that her calves and ankles have molded into one which is commonly known as cankles.
But before you give up and buy a one-piece, keep in mind that there is still some time to slim down before summer without endangering your health.
“The most important thing is to make healthy choices,” Jennifer Crabbe, a sophomore movement and sports science major said.
According to Crescencio Gonzalez, assistant athletic director for facilities and men’s soccer head coach, people looking to lose weight should work toward losing one to two pounds a week and create a deficit of 3,500-7,000 calories.
“If you want to lose weight you should eat right,” Sal Diaz, a sophomore movement and sports science major said.
“They need to decrease any empty calories,” Gonzalez said.
Empty calories include soda, candy, fast food and any other types of junk food.
“People should eat smaller portions more frequently and not late at night,” Crabbe said.
Losing weight is not just about a healthy diet. The most important thing you need to do when trying to lose weight is exercise.
“If you are already working out, you need to increase the time or intensity of your workout session,” Gonzalez said.
“A good workout consists of cardio and weights,” Crabbe added.
A workout session should be no less than 30 minutes three to four times a week according to Diaz.
Thirty minutes is the estimated time it takes to break down all the carbohydrates in your body before you begin to burn fat.
People who work out consistently, often become frustrated when the scale does not change but it is important to remember that if you are working out properly, you are often losing inches and not pounds.
“You shouldn’t just look at the scale,” Crabbe said.
Another key factor that should be taken into consideration when exercising is your water intake.
“Hydrate before and after you exercise,” Gonzalez said. “Your body works more efficiently when you hydrate.”
A common mistake made when exercising is not wearing the right apparel.
Be sure that you have on proper shoes before you run and that you are dressed according to the weather.
Also keep in mind when exercising, you need to keep your heart rate up but not too high otherwise you will burn muscle.
While exercising, your target heart rate should be within 50 to 85 percent of your maximum heart rate.
If you do become frustrated and are tempted to turn towards diet pills, don’t.
These pills seem like a quick fix and appear to make you lose weight in no time, but it is only temporary.
Diet pills make you lose weight but it is pure water that your body needs.
