Track teams compete in final invitational

Posted May 18, 2007

The University of La Verne’s men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in their final meet to qualify for nationals or improve their personal records last Saturday.

Eight student-athletes participated in the Occidental Invitational in Los Angeles.

They prepared for weeks getting their minds and bodies ready for the meet.

Some concentrated on getting more sleep and eating right, whereas others swore off sexual activity.

The men and women that participated in last week’s track meet did it for different reasons some wanted one last chance to compete in nationals, while others simply wanted to improve their personal records, and others was a combination of the two.

“I wanted to get a provisional mark to qualify for nationals,” said sprinter Dwayne Griffths, a senior movement and sports science major from Brooklyn. “I missed the mark by a fifth of a second.”

Those who still did not hit the mark to be able to compete in nationals still felt like they had improved.

Senior middle distance runner Efrain Partida’s time has gotten better year after year, even though he will not able to go to nationals this year.

“I am very happy with my performance, I have no regrets,” Partida said.
Many of the participants agreed the competition was fierce.

“The field was very strong, there were a lot of professional runners,” said Seve Villarreal a freshman sprinter from Denver. “The competition was tough.”

The people who did not qualify for nationals still improved their personal records and they hope to continue to get better as the years progress.

Freshman sprinter Adam Kazub wants to thank the coaches for motivating and pushing him to do well throughout the year.

The NCAA championships begin May 26 at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh.
