From every corner of campus, you can hear the beat of homecoming. With everything from the football game to the first University of La Verne Parent’s Weekend, Homecoming 2008 promises to be full of fun and excitement.
Saturday features a new addition to Homecoming weekend at ULV. Parents of first-generation students are invited to attend an open forum in the President’s Dining Room from 10 to 11:30 a.m., followed by a street fair and picnic from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
“We have a lot of tradition on campus, and we want them to walk away with that feeling of ULV,” Malissa Hernandez, alumni relations and special events assistant, said.
Aside from Parent’s Weekend, students and alumni are invited to participate in the traditional events such as the Homecoming football game, which kicks off at 1 p.m. against Pomona-Pitzer on Ortmayer Field. A special half time ceremony will take place in honor of Roland Ortmayer, who died last week at age 91.
The ULV Athletic Training Education Program is sponsoring a La Verne 5K Community Fun Walk/Run on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m.
Other events are more focused on ULV alumni.
Tonight a Homecoming dinner and dance will be held at the Sheraton Suites at the Fairplex, starting at 6:45 p.m. Harvey Good will be honored as a distinguished professor; Eric Bishop gains honors for service to alma mater. Virginia Garner will earn tribute for service to community, while Sue Ebersole Carter Stutzman will receive tribute for service to profession. Nathan Baca will garner honors for early achievement.
A special tribute will also be held for Ortmayer at the dinner.
Free receptions for communications, education, business and law will start at 5:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Fairplex.
A ULV Street Fair will take place 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by a picnic lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
Homecoming weekend will not end with Saturday’s events.
A La Verne Recognition Day and Coffee will be Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at the La Verne Church of the Brethren. The Floaters reunion and pot luck will take place at 12:30 p.m. in the President’s Dining Room.
Prior to the weekend events, CAB has held events all week to help students get involved in Homecoming 2008.
