La Verne celebrated four community heroes at the Los Angeles County Fair Wednesday in a special ceremony that was open to the public. The four heroes were selected for their service and commitment to the La Verne community. Recently named La Verne’s Volunteer of the Year, George Borst is committed to serving the city of La Verne. He is the current president of the Senior Golf Club, a club he started. He began serving as the president of the Senior Social Club. Borst also volunteers around the town, including for Friday night Bingo. Furthermore, he is the president of the Computer Club. Navya Reddy was selected as the young adult hero. She is a senior at Bonita High School and has managed to keep her grade point average at a 4.3 while serving the local community. Reddy has been volunteering for the San Dimas Community Hospital, the Girl Scouts, the San Dimas Public Library, and the student tutoring program at Bonita High School. Not only does Reddy find time to volunteer, but she also manages to find time to participate in varsity track, water polo, Spanish club and a variety of other groups. Reddy has also served on the L.A. County Fair Association’s Junior Fair Board. Frances Divine is an 87-year-old volunteer with the Senior Nutrition Program. She has worked in the organization for 16 years and she is now the office manager. Along with her work with the program, Divine volunteers for the majority of the special events and programs at the La Verne Community Center. Continuing the commitment to volunteer work, Bruce Becker, a volunteer basketball coach, is highly involved in the community. He is also a girls’ soccer booster and he is president of the La Verne Lazers Soccer organization. Some of Becker’s other volunteer activities include volunteering for high school track and field meets and operating the scoreboard. The heroes’ ceremony was celebrated at La Verne Day and followed the Bonita High School Band marching through the Fair. Those present for La Verne Day included University of La Verne President Steve Morgan, La Verne mayor Jon Blickenstaff and some of the City Council members. Divine and Reddy were not present at the ceremony. Susan Acker can be reached at: susan.acker@laverne.edu. |
