Curricular Practical Training

Some Guidelines for Students in the Doctoral of Public Administration (DPA) Program

The DPA is a work-based degree. The program assumes that all students in the program will be professionals working in the field. The work provides the context for students to explore theory explored in classes in a program that emphasizes the relationship between theory and practice. International students must have their work authorized by their advisor and the employer and endorsed by the international student advisor. The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) refers to this kind of off-campus work experience as Curricular Practical Training (CPT). For more information contact the International Student Center.

Eligibility

  1. Students must have completed nine months in F-1 visa status.
  2. Students must be in legal F-1 visa status, in good academic standing and making normal, satisfactory progress toward completion of their degree.
  3. CPT will not be authorized if it will delay a student's normal progress towards degree completion.
  4. The type of employment must be directly related to a student's major.
  5. CPT must be authorized on the I-20 before employment begins.
  6. CPT is authorized one term/semester at a time to verify continued eligibility.
  7. Students may not enroll in an internship course for the primary purpose of obtaining employment authorization.
  8. All documentation must be completed and the work authorized on the student's I-20 before work begins

Authorization Procedure

  1. Pick-up a "Curricular Practical Training Clearance Form," --available at the International Center.
  2. Check with your program advisor regarding eligibility and availability of work.
  3. Secure employment through your academic department, the career resource center, or your own efforts.
  4. Once employment is secured, have the employer endorse the CPT Clearance Form.
  5. Secure approval from your program chair on the CPT Clearance Form.
  6. Make an appointment with the International Student Advisor in the International Student Center.
  7. Bring the completed "Curricular Practical Training Clearance Form," proof of registration, your current I-20, copies of all I-20s you have been issued, and your passport to the International Student Center.
