Curricular Practical Training

Some Guidelines for MBA Students

The internship class (ECBU 598) provides a possible opportunity for students to obtain practical work experience in their field of study. In order for international students to participate in off-campus work experience, students must receive academic units for the work experience, unless it is a required component of their degree program. (The La Verne School of Business and Global Studies does not have requirements for internships.) The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) refers to kind of off-campus work experience as Curricular Practical Training (CPT).

Eligibility

  1. Students must have completed nine months in F-1 visa status.
  2. Students must be in legal F-1 visa status, in good academic standing and making normal, satisfactory progress toward completion of their degree.
  3. CPT will not be authorized if it will delay a student's normal progress towards degree completion.
  4. The type of employment must be directly related to a student's major.
  5. CPT must be authorized on your I-20 before employment begins.
  6. CPT is authorized one term/semester at a time to verify continued eligibility.
  7. Students may not enroll in an internship course for the primary purpose of obtaining employment authorization.
  8. Students must enroll in ECBU 598-Internship in Business for one unit of credit. Students may enroll a maximum of three terms.

Authorization Procedure

  1. Pick-up a "Curricular Practical Training Clearance Form," --available at the International Center.
  2. Check with your program chair and program advisor regarding eligibility and availability of internships.
  3. Secure internship employment through your academic department, the career resource center, or your own efforts.
  4. Once employment is secured, have employer endorse the CPT Authorization Form.
  5. Secure approval from your program chair on the CPT Authorization Form.
  6. Make an appointment with the International Student Advisor in the International Student Center.
  7. Bring the completed "Curricular Practical Training Clearance Form," proof of registration, your current I-20, copies of all I-20s you have been issued, and your passport to the International Student Center.
