Extension of stay: What is it? How do I do it?

What do I do if I don't finish my degree before my I-20 expires?

An F-1 student is admitted to the U.S. for "duration of status" (D/S), that is, to complete an educational program. However, if a student must remain in an educational program beyond the date originally estimated for completion of the program (as stated by item 5 on the initial Form I-20A-B issued to begin the program), the student must follow certain procedures for program extension.

Who may apply for a program extension?

  1. A student who has continually maintained status
  2. A student for whom the delay in completion is caused by compelling academic or medical reasons, such as changes of major or research topics, unexpected research problems, or documented illnesses.

Note: Delays caused by academic probation or suspension are not acceptable reasons for program extension. A student who fails to complete his/her program within the time prescribed in item 5 of his/her Form I-20A-B and cannot meet the eligibility criteria for program extension is considered out of status and must apply for reinstatement to student status.

Procedures

The student:

  1. Writes a letter requesting an extension of stay. The letter should include:
    1. The reason/s for the extension
    2. When the student will complete the program
  2. Print the form: "Academic Advisor's Recommendation for Extension of Time for a Program of Study." Fill it out, and have your advisor fill out his/her portion of the form.
  3. Turn in the completed form to the ISAS.
  4. The international advisor will check the documents and determine if an extension can be given.
